The Surfingskill PDF Compressor reduces PDF file size directly in your browser. It includes a 1-100 compression-strength control and two different methods because not every PDF can be compressed effectively in the same way.
Visual Compress vs Safe Optimize
How to Compress a PDF
- Choose your PDF file.
- Use Visual Compress if your priority is reducing file size, especially for scanned or photo-heavy documents.
- Choose Original Quality, Light, Medium or Strong, or adjust the 1-100 compression strength slider.
- Use Advanced settings only if you want custom DPI, image quality or grayscale.
- Use Original Quality (Safe Optimize) instead when keeping selectable text and interactive PDF structure is more important.
- Click Compress PDF, compare the result and download the output.
Which Compression Level Should I Choose?
Light Compression
Light mode renders pages at a higher resolution and uses higher JPEG quality. The output usually looks sharper, but the file will normally be larger than Medium or Strong mode.
Medium (Balanced) Compression
Medium (Balanced) is the default. It aims for a practical compromise between readability and file size for normal documents, scanned pages and PDFs containing photos.
Strong Compression
Strong mode uses lower render resolution and more JPEG compression. It can produce a smaller result, but fine text and images may become visibly softer.
Why Some PDFs Compress More Than Others
PDFs containing high-resolution scans and photos usually have more opportunity for size reduction. Text-only PDFs, already optimized PDFs and documents that already contain heavily compressed images may shrink much less.
Does Visual Compression Keep Searchable Text?
No. Visual Compress intentionally flattens each page into a compressed image so it can reduce image-heavy PDFs more reliably in a Blogger-only browser tool. The pages aim to look like the original, but text selection, search, hyperlinks, forms and accessibility structure may be lost. Choose Safe Optimize if you need to preserve these features.
What Does DPI Mean?
DPI controls how many pixels are rendered for each page. Higher DPI can preserve finer details but produces larger images and uses more memory. Lower DPI usually creates smaller output but can make small text or detailed graphics less sharp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the old PDF compressor not reduce my file?
Simply loading a PDF and saving it again with object streams does not necessarily recompress its embedded images. Image data is often the largest part of scanned or photo-heavy PDFs, so a structural re-save can produce little or no reduction.
Does this tool really compress PDF images?
Visual Compress renders pages and encodes them as JPEG images at the selected DPI and quality before creating a new PDF. This changes the image data and can therefore reduce image-heavy documents more substantially.
Can the output ever become larger?
Yes. Very small, text-only or already optimized PDFs can sometimes become larger after rasterization. The tool shows the before-and-after size so you can decide whether to keep the result.
Is the PDF uploaded to a server?
The compression logic in this version runs in your browser. PDF.js and pdf-lib are downloaded as JavaScript libraries from public CDNs, but the selected PDF is passed to those libraries locally by the page code.
Can I compress on mobile?
Yes, the interface is responsive. However, PDF rendering uses device memory and CPU, so very large PDFs may process more reliably on a laptop or desktop computer.
Can I compress password-protected PDFs?
This version does not include a password-entry workflow. Remove the PDF password using an authorized method before using the compressor.
Why is Safe Optimize sometimes the same size?
Safe Optimize avoids destructive page rasterization. If the PDF is already efficiently encoded, there may be very little redundant data that can be removed safely in the browser.
Final Words
A PDF compressor should be clear about the tradeoff between file size and document quality. No tool can guarantee strong lossless size reduction for every PDF. This Surfingskill version provides a real visual compression method for stronger reduction and a separate Safe Optimize mode for documents where preserving PDF structure is more important.
Note on signed documents: Rebuilding or re-saving a digitally signed PDF can invalidate its signature. Retain the original signed file.
